From the Connection

Wasaga Beach resident Melissa Wells is taking on the presidency of a newly formed Rotary youth group.

Rotaract, a service club for people between the ages of 18-30, is sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Wasaga Beach, Collingwood and South Georgian Bay.

The club offers young people a means to develop professionally and personally through community and international service.

Wells, 28, is a supply teacher. She was first exposed to Rotaract while living in Toronto. She said she joined to meet other young professionals.

“Rotoract focuses on volunteering, networking and socializing so that’s an important part of our club, to create connections among our members so for September we will be doing the ropes course at Blue Mountains for our social.

The local group is in the early stages of planning its activities. So far there’s plans to help the Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach and Area with its annual gala in November and a ski swap at Blue Mountain on Thanksgiving weekend.

“The great thing about the club is its directed by the members so really what people in the group are interested in doing is what we will pursue,” said Wells.

The club meets every other Wednesday, alternating between Wasaga Beach and Collingwood, with the next meeting being in Collingwood on Sept. 11.
