Brian Shelley gives the Club and update on the
work of the United Way
work of the United WayBrain Shelley presented to the Club and noted that the minimum wage of $16/hr contrasts with the Living Wage of $21/hr and leaves most working people $1000 behind every month. He shared that the UW in this area has changed its approach to securing funds by using Social Enterprise. They administer the LEAP (Low income Energy Program) program for several energy companies in the province and earn 15 cents on the dollar. Through work with the Federal Gov program Reaching Home Funding they will receive 15% per year to assist people with housing issues. This 'new way' of doing business not only ensures funding for programs, it puts people who need jobs in the front-lines with those who need help; compassion and commitment to the work is evident.
Brian says: "When we work TOGETHER, the results are GAME CHANGING.
